The Master of Arts (Asian Studies) (Applied Japanese Linguistics) is intended for students seeking a postgraduate qualification in the teaching of Japanese as a foreign language, either for professional purposes or as a step towards further research. It is offered by the Japan Centre in the Faculty of Asian Studies in cooperation with the Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts.
Prerequisites
Applicants should normally hold or expect to hold a Bachelor's degree with a least 2A honours, or an equivalent qualification, including passes in Japanese language at Credit level. Native speakers of Japanese do not require Japanese language courses, and in special cases applicants may be admitted who do not meet the above criteria but have relevant work experience. However, applicants must satisfactorily demonstrate that they meet the University's minimum English language entry requirements. Graduate Diploma students who perform at an overall level of distinction (70%) or higher in the coursework may, with the permission of the prescribed authority, transfer their enrolment to the MA(AS) Applied Japanese Linguistics degree. Mid-year entry is possible with a modified program negotiated with Program Convener.
