ASGS1008 The Big Ideas in Science

Course Description

 

To provide Associate Degree students in the Science and Technology stream with a basic understanding of key concepts in physics and chemistry, with related ideas in biology.

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students should have:

1. An understanding of how to apply scientific knowledge to real-world situations and to problem solving.

2. Skills in explaining scientific ideas and information

3.  A knowledge of interesting ways to demonstrate concepts practically with simple equipment

4. An appreciation of common difficulties which impede understanding

 

 

 

Indicative Assessment

  

Continuous assessment, project and practical assignments - 40% 

 Mid-semester in-class task orientated exam - 20%  

 Final examination  - 40%

 
Workload

 

Classes will meet twice weekly for two-hour sessions.  There will also be tutorial and project sessions as required.
