Course Description

This course examines Thailand's recent history with special emphasis on the transformations in the 1980s and 1990s. Topics include nationalism and national identity in the twentieth century, political culture, the changing nature of the public sphere, Thailand in a regional context (e. g. relations with neighbours and the Mekong River) and debates about rapid economic development and its consequences for the environment. The first third of the course will be taught in the standard format of two lectures and 1 tutorial per week, with the remaining two-thirds taught in seminar format.

Indicative Assessment Class participation (20%), first essay (20%), second essay (30%), final exam (30%).
Workload 32 contact hours per week.
