Course Description

Students undertake an individual project within one of the many cutting edge research groups in the discipline of Chemistry, with project areas including synthetic chemistry, biological chemistry, physical and theoretical chemistry, materials chemistry, and medicinal chemistry.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation of a chosen area of specialisation in chemistry, in the context of working within an internationally competitive research group
2. systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions
3. engage in systematic discovery and critical review of appropriate and relevant information sources
4. communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.
Indicative Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

  • Written report and seminar (60%; LO 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Log book (20%; LO 1, 2, 4)
  • Supervisor's assessment of research potential (20%; LO 1-4)
Workload For a 12 unit course, 130 hours of lab based research and 130 hours of independent learning
Eligibility Students must have a Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent with a major in chemistry with relevant experience or honours. Applicants with the equivalent of a pass degree may be admitted if they have a high level of relevant academic achievement.  The course is compulsory for all students enrolled in the Master of Chemistry.
Consent Required Approval of the graduate program covener in chemistry.
