Course Description

This is the first half of a one-year intensive beginners program in modern standard Chinese (Putonghua). The course includes both spoken and written Chinese.

Learning Outcomes
  A beginners confidence in spoken Chinese and a preliminary understanding of Chinese script
Indicative Assessment

1        short weekly take-home tests  – 10%

1       short weekly in-class listening tests- 5%

1       short weekly in-class writing tests-5%

1       short weekly in-class reading test -5%

1       short weekly in-class speaking tests -5%

1       Reading test (week 5) test– 10%

1       Writing test (week 8)-10%

1       Speaking test (week 8)-10%

1       Listening test (week 13)-10%  

1       Final examination (2 hour written exam during formal exam period) – 30%

 

 

Workload

Four hours of lectures and four hours of tutorials each week.
