| Course Description |
This is the first half of a one-year intensive beginners course in modern standard Chinese (Putonghua). The main aim of this semester is to enable the students to make a good start in spoken Chinese while also beginning to learn the script. |

| Indicative Assessment |
Two oral tests during the semester (20%), one written test during the semester (20%), one written exam during the exam period (50%, ten short weekly tests (10%). Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but may expect more rigorous assessment and additional assignment work, tailored to the graduate students’ interests. |
