Course Description

This is the first half of a one-year intensive beginners course in modern standard Chinese (Putonghua). The main aim of this semester is to enable the students to make a good start in spoken Chinese while also beginning to learn the script.

Learning Outcomes A beginners confidence in spoken Chinese and a preliminary understanding of Chinese script
Indicative Assessment

Two oral tests during the semester (20%), one written test during the semester (20%), one written exam during the exam period (50%, ten short weekly tests (10%). Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but may expect more rigorous assessment and additional assignment work, tailored to the graduate students’ interests.

Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs.
