The basic grammar of Classical Chinese and introductory readings.

• Familiarity with the basic features of classical Chinese syntax and word use.
• familiarity with many of the common particles used in classical Chinese.
• Understand key concepts about early Chinese society and culture
• Acquire a different cultural perspective from which to view oneself, one's culture and one's society
• Learn to engage with the ideas and perspectives of other learners
• Learn to think critically
• Develop skills in synthesising and contextualizing new information
• Develop an ability to work in cooperative groups on key issues in Chinese Studies and communicate findings to other course members

 Assessment will be based on (1) weekly translation tests (total 25% ); (2) 4 review tests at end of weeks 4, 7, 10, and 13; (15% each), and (3) classroom participation and attendance (15%).  Class attendance and participation is required.  Participation will be marked on attendance, willingness to participate, preparation and performance of oral reading and responding to questions.

• Attendance is required. Unexcused absences may affect the final grade, and students missing more than four classes may not receive credit for the course.
