Course Description

This course explores conceptual, compositional structures and their application to the visual and sonic domains including an overview of the fundamental principles in mathematical thinking and notation. The course uses techniques from mathematics, information technology and digital arts to explore the logic of the structures and their application in the development of visual and sonic vocabularies for new media arts. A number of traditional formal structures are examined in the light of contemporary practice in new media. The structures considered are generated using a range of techniques, including the application of affine or rational transformations. In each case the possibilities for non-literal application are considered.
