Course Description

The aim of this 12 unit course is to prepare students for undertaking the thesis component of the Doctor of Diplomatic Studies (DDiplS) program.

  1. the components of the coursethat will apply to all the students, for example, research methods, will be delivered in small reading groups and seminars facilitiates by academcis at the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomay.

  2. In addition, each student will participate in one-to-one discussions with APCD academics on readings that pertain to the specific thesis topic - most of which will be selected jointly by the student and academic.

  3. The emphasis will be on active interaction between the student group and with the academics.
Learning Outcomes Following this course, students will have the academic skills required for completing a post graduate degree: these include skills for research, analysis, methodological awareness, argumentation and writing.
Indicative Assessment

The course is worth 25% of the coursework component (which comprises 50% of the DDiplS). To achieve the DDiplS degree students must: achieve a pass grade minimum in the Diplomatic Doctoral Research Preparation    course; and complete and pass each course in the coursework component.

Essays will be worth 60% and exams, 40%.

Workload Students undertaking this course could expect a workload of 20 hours per week.  This is inclusive of actual contact hours for lectures and also out of class preparation time.

Eligibility Students enrolled in the Doctor of Diplomatic Studies only are able to undertake this unit.
Assumed Knowledge and
Required Skills
The course is based on the assumption that, since candidates require a Masters degree and extensive professional background to be eligible for entry to the program, they will mostly need to acquire a working knowledge of the methodologies required for conducting doctoral level research in diplomatic studies.
Prescribed Texts A reading brick will be provided at the commencement of the course.
