Course Description

The course introduces students to qualitative and quantitative research methods used by the social sciences to study sustainable environmental management. The course will increase students' knowledge of how research is designed and implemented and will enable them to assess the quality of research required as an input into policy making. The course will involve the development of a research proposal that will be implemented in the second semester as part of the Research Project course. This course is a pre-requisite for EMDV8066 Research Project.

Learning Outcomes

Students attending this course will learn:

  • to position research within the major paradigms of science and to assess the rigor of proposed research;
  • to use a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods;
  • to develop research questions and hypotheses and to choose appropriate methods to research them;
  • to prepare research proposals.
Indicative Assessment Tutorial assignments 10%; quantitative assignment 30%; qualitative assignment 25%; research proposal 35%
Workload 5 contact hours and about 15 hours reading and writing per week
