FILM2007 Directing for the Camera

Course Description

In this course students will analyse the process of translating scripts into visual images for the camera through an examination of the work of a number of film directors including Kazan, Hitchcock, Altman, Welles, Spielberg, Weir, and others. It will also include a practical workshop in which students will study the process of directing actors and the process of film making.

Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will have had the experience of directing a scene from a recognised script form the preparation and casting process to the final edit.
Indicative Assessment

Storyboard (30%), logbook (30%) and film project (40%).

Workload One 2-hour session for lecture and film viewing (excerpts) plus one 2-hour session for directing workshops and film making per week. Students will be expected to work outside these hours if necessary.
Requisite Statement

Permission of the Coordinator is required for entry to this course. Note: preference will be given to students who are undertaking a Film Studies or Drama major.
