| Course Description |
This course aims to provide students with an introduction to the analysis of spoken German in various contexts. Students will learn how to analyse systematically the structure of spoken interaction (conversation analysis) by looking at recorded data. The analysis will include regional and social aspects, structural differences between written and spoken discourse, informal and institutional talk (e.g. media), non-verbal behaviour, and cross-cultural communication. The course intends to closely link theory with practice and focuses on material that can be directly applied. Students are required to participate actively in class discussions and projects in which they have to use their theoretical findings. |
| Learning Outcomes | On successful completion, students will not only be able to transcribe spoken language, but also to analyse the linguistic differences between spoken and written German with regard to syntax, lexis and semantics. Furthermore, students will have an enhanced oral proficiency and will have learnt how to give academic presentations in German and how to chair group discussions. |
| Indicative Assessment |
Two class presentations (40%), one transcription (20%), one essay (20%), class participation (10%) and attendance (10%). |
