Course Description

This unit aims at develop an advanced competence in the modern spoken language by focusing on speech making and presentation skills. The course will be based on authentic materials taken from Japanese media and film with a view to exploring different styles of speech making.

Learning Outcomes

Students will build advanced language skills in listening, reading, analysis, interpretation and debate in Japanese and an understanding of the issues under discussion. Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

1. Understand Japanese material related to the course subject area;

2. Use relevant vocabulary to discuss the course topic areas,

3. Develop the confidence and expertise to engage in Japanese at an advanced level, and

4. Develop information gathering, presentation and analytic skills.

 

Indicative Assessment

Class participation (10%), 2 x Speech Presentation (40%), Debate (15%) , Essay 1 (5%), Essay 2 (10%), Mid-term exam (15%), Final exam (30%)

Three hours of classes per week
