Course Description

Extensive reading in contemporary Japanese texts on social, religious, historical, and cultural themes, and discussion of issues raised. No English translation involved. Essays in Japanese will be required.

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to be able to read in a wide range of materials in humanities, social sciences and natural sciences such as history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology and biology on their own with dictionaries.  Anyone who wants to be able to read any research materials in Japanese should feel confident to read authentic documents in various fields.  All classes are in a seminar format and are entirely conducted in Japanese.

Indicative Assessment

Two presentations (totaling 30 %), two oral exams (totaling 30%), two summaries of the reading texts (totaling 20%), a book review in Japanese (10%) and self-assessment (10%).
