Course Description

(a) principles of the modern Japanese writing system
(b) acquisition of hiragana, katakana and 120 kanji
(c) reading of graded Japanese texts.

Learning Outcomes At the end of the course students should have developed competence in reading and writing Japanese:
i) nature of the Japanese writing system
ii) meanings and practical usages of 120 kanji
iii) writing various Japanese sentences
iv) reading comprehension of about 300-ji passages.
Indicative Assessment

Practice sheets (5%), Periodic tests (30%), Assignment work (30%), and a final examination (35%), to be confirmed towards the end of semester.
