Course Description

Topics may include epic, historiography, satire, oratory, personal poetry, art, architecture, Roman philosophy and religion, early imperial society, late antiquity, Medieval Latin; authors may include Catullus, Virgil, Ovid, Martial, Cicero, Caesar, and Pliny the Younger. In studying the chosen text (or collection of texts) and its political, social and literary context students continue their study of the Latin language.

Indicative Assessment

Exercises (20%), 2,000-3,000 word essay (25%), mid-semester test (15%) and final examination (40%).
