Course Description

Objectives:
This special elective will allow for the in-depth analysis of a particular topic in intellectual property each year. It will focus upon a subject matter of particular significance to intellectual property�- such as biotechnology, digital technology, indigenous cultural property or competition law and intellectual property. It is expected that students will have on completion of the course:

  • A thorough grounding in the science of the technology and the market that has developed around it;
  • An understanding of the inter-relationship between the various regimes of intellectual property law,
  • An appreciation of the challenge to intellectual property law posed by the new technology or subject matter;
  • An awareness of policy problems which are developing in relation to particular scientific developments; and
  • A practical understanding of the management of intellectual property rights in the field of a particular technology or industry.

Content:
This course will consider a particular new technology or a certain industrial field from the perspective of the various regimes of intellectual property. The syllabus of this course will depend upon the selected topics in intellectual property chosen for examination by the convenor. Possible topics include:

  • Intellectual Property and Biotechnology;
  • Intellectual Property and Digital Technology;
  • Intellectual Property and Public Sector Research;
  • Intellectual Property and Competition Law;
  • Intellectual Property and Indigenous Cultural Property; and
  • Intellectual Property and Philosophy.

Students must rely on the Approved Assessment which will be posted to the course homepage on the ANU Law website, prior to the commencement of the course.
