Course Description

While taxation law is a specialised area of legal practice, this course aims to equip students to recognise the existence of tax issues in relation to any transaction and know when to recommend that clients seek specialised taxation advice.
In particular, the course focuses on the impact of the reforms associated with A New Tax System, the Review of Business Taxation and Pay As You Go measures upon taxpayers; tax planning with respect to a range of transactions which arise in an ordinary course of general legal practice, and tax administration, including the Commissioner's power to obtain information, rights and processes of administrative review with respect to taxation matters and the Commissioner's powers to compel payment of tax debts.

Indicative Assessment

A "take-home" examination in two parts.
