Course Description

A study of the syntactic structures found in the world’s languages, emphasizing the semantic notions that are being expressed in languages of various different types. The major topics discussed are: word classes (parts of speech); phrase structure and word-order, grammatical categories, grammatical relations; and relations between clauses.

Indicative Assessment

Three assignments (50%), research report (25%), and final examination (25%).

Workload

2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of tutorial per week.
