Course Description

This course covers the same topics as Phonetics: Sounds of the World's Languages LING1010 but adopts a more theoretical stance and involves somewhat different readings and assignments.

Indicative Assessment

Tape transcription assignments (30%), transcription test (15%), fieldwork transcription (10%), acoustics vowel/tone plot (8%), fieldwork project (27%) and in-class test (10%).

Workload

2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of tutorial per week

Requisite Statement

None but students are advised to take Introduction to the Study of Language LING1001/2001 first.  First year students are advised to take Phonetics: Sounds of the World's Languages LING1010.
