This is an advanced level course that examines percussion pedagogy from 1930 to the present day. Students will learn through an exploration of current teaching strategies for percussion. Various pedagogical theories and methods will be examined for students aged 5 – 8, 9 – 12, 14 – 17, 18 – adult. Specific studies will include pedagogical approaches to pulse, metre. Techniques and grips studied included: Matched, Traditional, German, French, Stevens, Musser, Burton, Hinger and Moeller.  Pedagogical theories and styles will be examined. Students will be required to observe the teaching environment in both individual and ensemble genres and teach a practical component (depending on their university status).  There will be discussions of teaching strategies, methods and styles. It is expected that the student will explore the wide range of materials and approaches to music tuition.

Presentation of comprehensive, annotated portfolio of observations and materials (50%), two class presentations (20%) and written examination (30%).
