This is an advanced level course that examines percussion literature and pedagogy from 1200 to the present day. The course will focus on solo literature, (accompanied and unaccompanied) as well as chamber music for percussion ensembles and mixed chamber music containing percussion. This unit will also examine the history of percussion through composition and orchestration. Topics to be covered will include performance practice, classification of percussion instruments and innovative techniques.

Using Microsoft access, the student will compile an annotated database of written music and resources for percussion. The survey develops the student’s ability to accurately assess and select, from the vast range of resources available, materials for informed research, teaching and performance. It is expected that this course will continue to build upon the past work of previous classes.

Presentation of comprehensive, annotated database of percussion literature (50%), two class presentations (20%) and written examination (30%).
