Course Description

This course is required if no previous formal optics and photonics training is not present.

This course covers the topics:

  • Physical optics including imaging diffraction
  • Interference
  • Fourier transforms
  • Image formation
  • Spatial filtering
  • Optical cavities
  • Laser resonators
  • Laser modes
  • Gain and amplifiers
  • Laser oscillatron and operation (including 18 hours laboratory work)
Workload In addition to the course material there will be 18 hours of laboratory work. 
Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs.
