| Course Description |
This course will examine the historical, cultural, and structural roots of indigenous disadvantage in remote areas of Australia. Following an over view of the history of indigenous policy and of public policy theory and indigenous affairs, the first few weeks will present an overview of the demographic characteristics and material position of Australia's indigenous people. Classes will canvass the implications of health, education, governance, land acquisition, customary economic activity, and large-scale resource projects for indigenous policy in a range of contexts. Both government policy approaches and indigenous responses to these policy options will be considered.
The overall aim of the course is to inform critical reflection on underlying issues of cultural difference, participation and choice when it comes to developing indigenous policy at all levels of government. |
