This course focuses on key questions to do with gender and global politics. It will analyse men and women's experiences, gender relations and feminist scholarship in relation to collective identity conflicts, political violence and war. It will begin with an analysis of the international politics of identity, boundary politics and the making of the outsider. It will then focus on the gendered politics of war and peace. It interrogates key concepts in critical security studies, peace research and feminist ethics. It will conclude with a review of contemporary women's organising across identity and state lines for peace.

1. Understanding of Feminist IR theory, Human Security, Critical Theory and the politics of war and peace.
2. Understand the 'human factor' of major post-Cold War conflicts.
3. Understand the role of 'identity politics' in contemporary war and peace.
4. Develop research, analytical, writing and oral skills

Essay (2,000 words) 50%, Essay (500 words) 15%, Exam 25% and Tutorial Work 10%.

22 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorial.

5 hours in class and assessment preparation per week.

Two first-year courses in Political Science when taken as a Political Science course or any 12 first-year units when taken as a Gender, Sexuality and Culture course.
