| Course Description |
This course addresses some of the most important issues in International Relations Theory with special emphasis on developments in the post WWII period. Following an introduction to the major theoretical concepts employed by IR scholars and policymakers, the course explores in more detail: theories of power politics Realism, the neo (realism)/neo (liberalism) debate, various critical social theory perspectives, the resurgence of religion in IR and the neo-conservatism intrinsic to the Bush administration at the beginning of the 21st Century. |
| Learning Outcomes |
After Successful completion of this course, students should: Be appreciative of the importance of 'theory' in everyday political life Have a good basic understanding of some of the most important theoretical perspectives on the international relations agenda Be capable of comprehending in a more sophisticated way issues, events and controversies in the current international arena Be ready for Honours level study in international relations |
| Indicative Assessment |
Essay (60%), examination (30%) and tutorial assessment (10%). |
| Workload |
One lecture and 1 x two hour seminar a week. Lectures will be taped. Students will be required to spend an average of ten hours per week - outside of direct contact hours -preparing for tutorials, researching essay and exam topics. |
