SEAS8025 Asean States: An Introduction

Course Description

The aim of this core course is to provide an introductory survey of the history, societies and political ideologies of the states which currently make up the association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The survey will be focussed on the twentieth century and the events and influences which have contributed to the contemporary nature of the states.


No previous knowledge of the region is assumed and lectures will take the form of country overviews presented by members of staff and diplomats who have specialist knowledge of the relevant nations. The course will conclude with a discussion of the objectives and achievements of ASEAN as a regional grouping.


Discussion of the research and bibliographic skills necessary for academic writing will also be covered in the course.

The course will be presented through two one-and-a-half hour meetings each week. Assessment will be discussed at the first meeting.

Indicative Assessment

40%, Journal – 30%, Essay – 30%.
