Course Description

This course is a comprehensive overview of survey methodology with a focus on applications in sociology. Beginning from a review of the philosophical underpinnings of this important quantitative research technique, students will study the conceptualisation of research questions suitable for surveys. This will include questionnaire design and administration.

The second part of the course will focus on sampling techniques; the understanding of how samples can be representative and to what extent survey results can be generalized. Students will learn to test research hypotheses using statistical estimation.

A large part of the course will be devoted to learning how to prepare and analyse data in SPSS - a popular software package for data analysis. Throughout the course, students will write data analysis reports and critique quantitative literature.

Indicative Assessment

Examination (35%), assignments (55%) and tutorial and lab participation (10%).

Workload 14 hours of lectures, 8 hours of tutorials and 10 x one hour computer laboratory sessions. Lectures will be taped.
