Course Description This course will examine theoretical explanations and research findings concerning collective behaviour, such as riots and mobs, and social movements. Particular attention will be directed to the objectives and strategies of social movements, such as passive resistance, sabotage and terrorism, and to attempts to control social movements by the State and/or other interested parties. The sociological factors related to recruitment to and exiting from movement activity, and the long-term social and personal consequences of activism will be studied. Selected social movements will be covered in depth, for example, student political movements, liberation movements, and the environmental movement.

This course is included in the Sociology major.

Indicative Assessment One 2,200-word essay or report (min. 35%), a final examination (min. 35%), and tutorial participation (25%) will be required. Details will be discussed with students.
Workload

Two lectures and one tutorial per week.
