Course Description

This course introduces the principles of data collection, with particular emphasis on the design of experiments and surveys, and methods for analysing such data.

Topics chosen from: Principles of experimental design; Comparison of two treatments; Analysis of variance; Maximum likelihood and REML; Factorial experiments; Blocking and split-plot designs; Finite-population sampling, including censuses and sample surveys; Sampling methods, including stratification, clustering and complex surveys; Design-based analysis; Observational studies.

Learning Outcomes On completion of this course students should understand and be able to apply the processes and applications outlined in the course description.

  • 80% Final exam (3 hours)
Workload Standard semester course workload (39 contact hours) plus private study time.

Areas of Interest Statistics
Eligibility At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree with at least two years of university level statistical and mathematical study including calculus and linear algebra, as well as mathematical statistics and linear regression theory.
