Course Description

This course is about the microeconomics of defence; how nations organise, fund and populate their armed forces. Decisions about money are at the heart of strategic and defence policy.  The course explores the defence budget process; how it is set, and how it is spent.  It covers the key management issues which determine how efficiently defence departments use their money, and the economic drivers and consequences of defence spending. It also considers patterns of international defence expenditure. Particular attention will be devoted in this course to Australia's defence budget and defence capability procurement.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will appreciate the interplay between resources and strategic affairs at the military-organisational and national level.  Students will have the ability to understand basic numerical data in the context of informing strategic questions. They will also be equipped with an ability to understand and effectively communicate the implications of resources on defence and strategic policy. 

Indicative Assessment Assignments 60%, Examination 40%.
Workload Students undertaking this course could expect a workload of 10 hours a week. This is inclusive of actual contact hours for lectures and also out of class preparation time.
