Course Description

This course examines terrorism and other forms of political violence in terms of their relationship with the forces of globalization, especially as these forces impact on the politics of identity and culture. Issues explored include the nexus between globalization and the spread of identity-based violence, conflicts pursued in the name of national identities, religion, and secular belief systems, the political psychology of politically motivated violence, and the contested ideological and cultural motivations for terrorism. The course concludes with an investigation into the utility and implications of conventional state-based responses to such violence (such as the ?War on Terror?).

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will develop a sophisticated understanding of (a) the global circumstances behind rise of culture and identity as contested political concepts, and (b) under what circumstances cultural politics can take on a violent/terrorist edge. Students’ understanding of the challenges that culturally inspired violence poses to global politics, especially global governance will be enhanced as well as a deeper understanding of the ethical ambiguities that often surround political violence, and how these ambiguities can complicate efforts at international mediation.  Students will also have the ability to contribute in a constructive way to public debates in areas including terrorism, state-sponsored violence, trade-offs between civil rights and public security, and reform of the global political system.
