Pacific Studies Major

Add Pacific Studies to my interest list
Offered By ANU College of Asia and the Pacific

The College of Asia and the Pacific at the ANU is introducing an exciting new program, Australia¹s first undergraduate major in Pacific Studies.

The Pacific, or Oceania, is the largest, deepest and oldest ocean on the planet covering over one third of the earth's surface and home to approximately 34 million people speaking over 1000 languages. Beginning in 2008 students across the ANU campus will have the option to engage in this diverse and dynamic region through a major in transdisciplinary Pacific Studies.

The Australian National University is a leading international institution in Pacific research and students will have the opportunity to interact with many of the ANU scholars at the forefront of scholarship and policy-making on a region of vital importance to Australia. Pacific Islanders also represent some of the fastest growing populations in the country and are increasingly visible in Australian popular culture.

General Requirements for the Cognitive Major
A cognitive major comprises 8 courses (48 units), of which at least 4 courses (24 units) must come from Faculty of Asian Studies offerings. The cognitive major may not normally include more than 12 units at first-year level. The cognitive major may include up to 24 units in relevant courses taught outside the Faculty, selected from those listed in the details section as relevant to the various fields of study, or other courses with the approval of the Sub Dean.

There is great flexibility in constructing this major and students are invited to select a field of study which best meets their academic need. Ideally the cognitive major will achieve two aims: it will support the study of a chosen Asian society, and it will give exposure to theoretical or disciplinary approaches.
