Graduate Certificate in Higher Education
Degree Structure
The GradCertHE program comprises 24 units of coursework. The GradCertHE program is highly flexible in content, and allows participants to tailor their study to meet their professional needs and interests. Participants are encouraged to discuss their individual learning goals with the Program and Course Convenors.
The GradCertHE program focuses on:
- learning, teaching and curriculum innovation
- research supervision and academic leadership
Students take two core courses integrated with a project or program of action learning (2 x 9-units) and a final 6-unit capstone course EDUC8001: Enhancing Your Academic Practice. EDUC8001 provides an opportunity for participants to integrate and reflect on their learning and experience from all prior courses undertaken in the Graduate Certificate program.
Contact Requirements
Teaching and learning contact time will total approx 120 hours per 6 unit course and may include class meetings course readings, project work and on-line discussions. Between face-to-face sessions participants will be expected to engage in course readings, project work and on-line discussions. The program is flexible - participants can customise their study commitments to meet specific needs, subject to overall assessment requirements.
Duration
The GradCertHE commences each year in Semester 2, and is designed to be completed over 18 months of part time study, with a maximum completion time of 3 years. The program commences in Semester 2 of each year.

Admission criteria
Participants must have completed an undergraduate degree from a recognised higher education institution.
Applications for ANU Staff
Vice-Chancellor's Staff Development Scholarship scheme
The Vice-Chancellor is encouraging ANU academic staff to undertake the GCHE, or the MHE by waiving tuition fees for all eligible staff under the Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Development Scholarship program. Interested staff are encouraged to discuss this option with their Dean (or supervisor in the case of general staff).
The following staff are eligible to apply for an ANU Staff Development Scholarship:- General and academic staff employed on a continuing basis by the Australian NationalUniversity
- General and academic staff employed on a fixed term basis by the Australian NationalUniversity with a termination date no earlier than 1 January 2010
- Staff who are Australian Citizens, New Zealand Citizens or holder of a permanent Visa (evidence will be required) and have not used all of their seven year study learning entitlement.
- the individual's supervisor and College Convenor (academic staff)
- the individual's supervisor and the College Executive Officer or the Director of the Administrative area as appropriate (general staff).
If you are eligible for the Staff Development Scholarship, lodge a combined application form for the Scholarship and Program with the ANU Admissions Office. Closing Date for Applications
The program commences in Semester 2 of each year. Applications must be received at the ANU Student Admissions Office by June 30.
Other Australian applications
Applicants who are permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand are eligible to apply as domestic students. Lodge application with the ANU Student Admissions Office by 30 June. Postgraduate Coursework Application for Local Students
Applications from current ANU Students
Postgraduate research students wishing to apply will require written permission from the Chair of their supervisory panel and the Delegated Authority (normally Dean/Director of their area) for their original program of study, as enrolment in two postgraduate programs at the same time is normally not permitted.
International student applications
As this program is only offered part-time, only current staff or postgraduate students of the ANU, with permission, may be admitted as international students. Students will be charged course fees at full fee rates rather than HECS-HELP rates. Applicants must apply as international students if they are not permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand using the Postgraduate Coursework Application for International Students.
Advanced Standing
A completed Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (or equivalent) provides 50% advanced standing towards the Master of Higher Education. Intending participants interested in discussing options for advanced standing in recognition of relevant courses or projects completed at ANU or elsewhere should consult the Program Convenor.
