The Master of Geographical Science offers a flexible program for advanced learning in geography and the geographical sciences. The Master of Geographical Science graduates can expect to:

The scope of the Master of Geographical Science is broad, reflecting Australian National University's diversity and strength in geography and the geographical sciences. The flexibility of course requirements for the degree program allows programs to be structured to meet individual interests; all students are required to develop strengths in a nominated area through independent research and major essay or sub-thesis components. Typically, this will build on coursework structured to reflect both the student's background and interests and SRES' principal research and teaching themes

Admission Criteria

Candidates must have an appropriate degree at First Class or Second Class Division A at Honours level, typically in the relevant study field such as Forestry or a related discipline, such as the geographical sciences, or an appropriate Graduate Diploma from a recognised university with an average mark of at least 70%. Professional experience in a relevant field for a number of years (usually a minimum of two), and a record of publications, may also be taken into account in evaluating a case for admission.

In certain cases where admission is requested to the Master degree program on the basis of work experience, or evidence of an Honours degree or a graduate diploma in a different field of study, the School may recommend the candidate enrol in a Graduate Diploma. After successful completion of 4 courses (24 units), at a required standard towards the Graduate Diploma degree program, transfer to the Master degree program is possible.
