The choice of Master of Business Administration (MBA) program is important to your career and the decision demands a careful analysis of the benefits to you as a graduate. If you aspire to a leadership role in the corporate, business or government spheres, then you should consider the ANU as one of your first choices for your postgraduate studies. The ANU MBA program is one of the best in Australia because:

  • Prestige - the MBA brings the benefit of a degree from Australia’s highest-ranked university – ANU (ranked as the top university in Australia and 16th in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement (UK) November 2004).   ANU is distinguished nationally and internationally for its high quality research and educational programs. Our graduates gain a degree which is recognised by employers around the world.
  • Small, interactive classes - the ANU is a specialised, selective institution characterised by high levels of student staff interaction and small group presentation learning. As each MBA class is generally limited to around 60 students, you will be more than just one student among many. Some other universities have very large MBA classes. Case studies are used in teaching so students gain further knowledge of real-life situations.
  • Specialised streams of study - the ANU MBA program is designed to enable students to specialise in a business-related field in which the ANU has a world-renowned reputation. These include Asia-Pacific studies, Finance, Innovation, Technology and Commercialisation, Leadership, Project Management, and Business of Government. For students who seek a broader based program, the option to tailor the MBA to suit your needs also exists.
  • Real-life business project - core to the ANU MBA program is the Integrating Business Project, a real-life opportunity to develop and implement a new venture business plan for a company. This is not a simulation – students work with companies based in Canberra and around Australia to assist them in developing new business ventures.
  • Experienced class colleagues - students must have a minimum of three years of full-time professional work experience, so class colleagues add value to each other’s professional education experience.
  • Intensive study options - the MBA is usually completed over 24 months, however depending on course selection it may be completed in 18 months.
  • Network of alumni - since its establishment in 1994 the ANU MBA has continued to attract high quality students. Our MBA alumni now hold leadership positions in corporations and governments in Australia and internationally. The ANU College of Business and Economics provides graduates with a quality alumni network operating in over 40 countries around the world.

Commencement and Application Closing dates

Applications for the full-time MBA program (July commencement) close 31 May.

Applications for the part-time MBA program close 30 November (February commencement) and 31 May (July commencement).

Applications are assessed on a rolling basis, however, as visa requirements and processing times vary between countries, it is recommended that international candidates submit applications as early as possible.

Admission Requirements

Entry to the MBA program is competitive and places are limited.  The following entry requirements are the minimum requirements an applicant must present to be eligible to be considered for admission to the program.  The final decision for admission rests with the Dean of the ANU College of Business and Economics.

Academic requirements - a Bachelor degree in any discipline from a recognised university.  The relative ranking and/or reputation of the university may be taken into consideration.  Applicants completing an Australian degree program must have achieved a minimum grade average of 65% in their undergraduate studies.  Students completing degree studies outside Australia will need to meet a similar minimum grade requirement, however due to variations in grading scales the specific requirements vary between countries.  As an indication, examples of grades required include a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or Upper Second Class Honours degree.  Please contact the ANU directly for the grade average required for your country.

Work experience - applicants must have at least 3 years professional or managerial work experience accumulated after the completion of a bachelor degree or at least 5 years work experience overall.  The applicant’s work experience will be determined from information supplied in the application form, CV, referees reports and statement of purpose.  There must be clear evidence of career development.

Applicants must provide 2 referee reports.  As these may be checked by ANU to verify candidates’ work experience, referees’ contact details must be current.

English Language - applicants who are citizens of Australia, New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Singapore or South Africa can demonstrate English language capability by evidence of completion of their bachelor degree where the medium of instruction was English at a recognised, local university in their home country.

Applicants from all other countries and Australian permanent residents will usually be required to supply evidence of English language capability which meets the ANU requirements.  The ANU English language requirements are:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – overall score of  6.5 with no band below 6.0
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – computer-based score of 230 with TWE of 4.5 OR paper-based test score of 570 with TWE of 4.5

ANUCollegeIntensive English Language Courses

International students may undertake general and academic English courses through ANU College, which is located on the ANU campus.  Students who have achieved the following English language scores:

  • IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.0
  • TOEFL 550 (210 computer-based) with TWE of 4.0

may undertake the ANU Access Program (CRICOS Code 045067J), a 10-week English and Academic Preparation course. Successful completion of the program (at 60%) will enable students to fulfil the English Language requirement for the MBA program.

To increase your chances of being accepted to the MBA:

  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) - applicants are recommended to take the GMAT test to enhance their competitiveness in the selection process.  A GMAT score above 630 will improve candidates’ chances of acceptance to the MBA, especially if the Bachelor degree GPA is only at the minimum level required.
  • Interview - Applicants are recommended to take the opportunity to meet with ANU representatives when ANU is visiting their city.  While it is not possible for us to interview all applicants, those we do meet may have an enhanced competitiveness in the selection process.
  • Referee Reports - applicants are required to supply two referees reports, and at least one of these reports must be from a past or current employer. Reports which detail candidates’ work responsibilities will add to the competitiveness of an application.
