This is a reading course for students who have completed Intermediate Arabic ‘B' or its equivalent. Readings should be completed in line with the Guidelines provided to students. Focus will be on one area of Arabic studies, i.e. Linguistics. Students enrolling in this course should be able to undertake a small-scale research project in Arabic Linguistics and present their findings in a scholarly manner.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

• Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of some aspects of advanced Arabic syntax and morphology;
• Demonstrate proficiency in more complex written syntactic and discourse structures and extend their capacity to use such structures appropriately to undertake a small-scale research in Arabic linguistics
• Demonstrate their ability to present their findings in a scholarly manner in Arabic.
• Demonstrate their advanced linguistic skills and functional understanding of Arabic Language.
• Demonstrate their knowledge of specific linguistic issues of Arabic syntax.

2,500 word essay in Arabic due at the end of semester (50%)

30-minute oral presentation on essay topic due at end of semester (50%)

Two hours of language classes per week.
