Course Description

The course examines aspects of 19th-century art and architecture in Europe after Romanticism, and will concentrate on the emergence of modernism in the painting of the Impressionists and their circle. Themes to receive special attention will include the representation of everyday life, realism and naturalism, and the changing roles of academic art.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • 1. Describe the major developments in 19th century French art, particularly in relationship to the emergence of Modernism.
  • 2. Connect major social and political developments with artistic movements from Realism through to Post-Impressionism.
  • 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the market forces surrounding the ‘painters of modern life' and how they negotiated a conservative art world.
  • 4. Research and access information on French 19th century art and organise your research into compelling and intelligent arguments.
  • 5. Speak with confidence about 19th century French art.
Indicative Assessment 1,000 word tutorial paper (25%), 4,000 word essay (45%), Image test (20%) and tutorial participation (10%).
