This course is taken under the guidance of the student's academic advisor, but may involve teaching and learning from a wide variety of sources. The program of study and/or research is approved by the PhB Convener on the recommendation of the academic advisor of the student. The sources include but are not limited to:

• Involvement in current research at the University or organisation external to ANU,
• Special research projects from both the Faculties, Research Schools and the Emeritus Faculty of the ANU,
• Special lecture courses,
• Integrated, cross-disciplinary offerings which could involve another Faculty as well as the Faculty of Asian Studies,
• Reading courses / literature reviews,
• If applicable, specially designed courses of field work or laboratory work, and
• Seminars to staff and students

Due to the individual nature of this course it is not possible to provide an exclusive list of learning outcomes. However, the following is an indicative list of possible outcomes. it is expected that on successful completion of this course students should be able to:
1. identify issues of interest in the field under consideration;
2. discuss these issues coherently and persuasively;
3. assess arguments made in the field;
4. explain the complex attitudes people have to these issues;
5. analyse and compare relevant data;
6. collaborate with other students and staff to select and combine materials for a case study;
7. research, present and justify the results of your collaboration with other students and staff with respect to the case studies;
8. reflect on and articulate how your own views on the field have developed over the course of the semester

Due to the individual nature of this course the assessment regime is to be designed by the student and the academic advisor.

One possible scenario might be as follows:

Weekly summaries/critiques (of 1,200 words each) (30%);

Two 3,000-5,000 word essays (70%).
