ASIA6074 Popular Culture in East Asia

Course Description This course aims to introduce students to the amazing world of pop culture in East Asia, covering China, Japan and Korea. Working through a number of topics, students will be shown the various ways in which they can look at pop culture, and use it to learn about Chinese, Korean and Japanese societies. Topics will include: manga/anmie, magazines, TV dramas, games & gadgets, pop music/entertainment, fashion/cosplay and martial arts.
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the successful learner will:

  • gain an understanding of the defining characteristics of East Asian popular cutlure
  • gain experience in discussing popular practical and theoretical paradigms that apply in cultural studies
  • learn how to examine the historical, social and cultural environments that produce pop products and use this knowledge to develop their critical thinking, and analytic and research skills
  • study the implications of the many fan communites and their relationship to popular culture
  • gain experience in publically presenting their ideas and defending their position 

Indicative Assessment

 

Post-grad assessment will be based on:
1)    Attendance, tutorial question preparation and participation in class discussions (15%);
2)    Tutorial presentation (15%); 2 presenters per tutorial: 10 minute presentation: students write their own question and produce a discussion handout. Presentations will receive peer assessment.
3)    Essay 1 (2000-word mini essay, 20%)   

4)     Essay 2 (3750 words, 40%):      

5)     Essay 2 Abstract, Outline and Tutorial Defence (10%)

  • Week 8 : Essay 2 Abstract, Outline and Annotated Bibliography Due
  • Weeks 12 & 13: Essay 2 Defence (in Tutorials) 
  • Essay 2 Due Date: End of Week 14.
NB: pictures and alternative media may be included in (or submitted as part of) the essay.
Requisite Statement This course is available to graduate students. Consultation with one of the lecturers is recommended if students are in doubt about the appropriateness of their background for taking this course. Incompatible with ASIA6074.
