| Course Description |
This course aims to introduce students to the practical aspects of life and work in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam by assigning them as a voluntary participant in a professional institution or organisation. Students will be required to attend one or more weeks of regular briefing sessions before departure. These will cover the background of the organisations with which they will work, current in-country situation, cross-cultural communication, business etiquette, and basic skills such as CV and letter writing in the target language. |
| Learning Outcomes |
By the end of the program, students are expected to be able to (a) gain a significant experience and make an academic observation on a professional organization in Indonesia as demonstrated in his/her correspondence and journal (b) write a descriptive and reflective essay on a topic chosen on the basis of his/her experience as an intern working for a professional organisation. (c) obtain basic skills of cross-cultural communication and correspondence for working in a different cultural and social settings. d) gain a substantial progress in language proficiency particularly in his/her writing skills since all assessment should be written in the target language. |

Assessment will be based on: Daily Journal - 2,000 words (40%) in target language |
| Workload |
Six weeks participation in an approved professional organisation in Indonesia or Thailand or Vietnam. Systematic and frequent entries of journal and regular correspondence with course coordinator. Placements will be subject to availability and security assessment. Attendance at one or more briefing sessions on campus during the semester before departure (number of sessions may vary depending on nature of host organisations and size of participant group) and one write-up session upon returning from the field. |

NOTE: Entry to this course in any session is by departmental consent Permission of coordinator (based on language proficiency equivalent to completion of any relevant third year language course. May be taken at any time after completion of second year language courses (or equivalent) with prior approval of the coordinator. Ability to finance travel to and from destination and pay for visa and living expenses for the period of participation in the organisation. Students will not receive remuneration for their participation in the organisation |
