ASTR4005F Astronomy and Astrophysics IV Honours

Later Year Course

Offered By Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics
Academic Career Undergraduate
Course Subject Astronomy and Astrophysics
Offered in First Semester, 2010, Second Semester, 2010, First Semester, 2011, and Second Semester, 2011
Unit Value Range 12 units to 24 units
Course Description

Students proceeding to the Honours year of the Bachelor of Science have a choice of enrolling in one of the following:
MATH4005F Mathematics IV (H)
MATH4009F Computational Science IV (H)
PHYS4003F Physics IV (H)
PHYS4004F Theoretical Physics IV (H)
ASTR4005F Astronomy and Astrophysics IV (H)

The type of honours enrolment will depend on the nature of the research project, and of the choice of courses taken in the 4th year.

The research project forms a major component (50-60%) of the assessment in the honours year. Students will have a choice of a wide variety of projects offered by staff at the RSAA, the Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Physics every year. The remaining 40-50% will be in the form of coursework which could consist of fourth year courses offered by the Departments of Mathematics or Physics, third year astrophysics courses that they may not have already completed, or astrophysics courses offered specifically to fourth year students under the UAAP.

Among the fourth year honours courses that will be available are:
High Energy Astrophysics
Diffuse Matter in the Universe
Observational Techniques
Stellar structure and evolution

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation of a chosen research topic in astronomy and/or astrophysics
2. systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions
3. engage in systematic discovery and critical review of appropriate and relevant information sources
4. appropriately apply statistical or other evaluation processes to original data
5. communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.

Indicative Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

  • Research project (50-60%; LO 1-5)
  • Coursework (40-50%; LOs of relevant courses)
