Offered By Biology Teaching and Learning
Academic Career Graduate Coursework
Course Subject Biology
Offered in Second Semester, 2010
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description

This course is designed to be taken with BIOL8221 to give students the opportunity to extend their practical experience in advanced population genetic analysis. The course is underpinned by the theory presented in BIOL8221 and provides students the opportunity to enhance their depth of understanding of the theory; strengthen analytical and computing skills; and further enhance oral and written skills.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Use software packages such as GenAlEx with proficiency and confidence to conduct a research project involving the analysis of real population genetic data with minimal supervision
2. Interpret and critically evaluate the outcomes of statistical analysis associated with the research project
3. Search the literature to identify papers relevant to the research project and distill, integrate and evaluate these finding in writing in relation to the outcomes of the project

Indicative Assessment

Written report that demonstrates capacity to analyse, interpret and critically evaluate real data sets in relation to the literature and the biological context (100%; LO 1-3)

Workload Computer-based tutorials over a 6 week block.
Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs. and SpecialistSpecialist courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide for the acquisition of specialist skills; or 'second degree' and higher level of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs; or knowledge associated with professional accreditation.
