Course Description

The majority of the world's population lives on less than 2 USD per day. The goal of this course is to better understand their lives. What are their lives like? Why do they remain poor? What are the fundamental determinants of poverty? What policies can promote development?

The course will use detailed survey data of the world's poor and look at recent research to help answer these questions.

Please note that in 2010 the course will be taught by a different instructor than in the recent past.

Indicative Assessment

By examination, assignments, and an essay.

Workload

Two lectures per week with tutorials throughout the semester plus private study time.

Requisite Statement

ECON1101 Microeconomics 1 and ECON1102 Macroeconomics 1, or ECON1100 Economics 1 (H), or ECON1001/1011 Economics I (P or H).
