Course Description

An introductory section surveys the form and nature of contemporary relationships in the world economy and identifies significant issues in those relationships within various conceptual and analytical frameworks. The general trends of internationalisation and globalisation evident in the world economy over the recent past are then described and analysed, with particular emphasis placed upon the policy developments that have given shape to the institutional elements of those trends. The associated trend of regionalisation in the world economy is covered in the third section of the course, which describes and analyses the various forms of regional economic integration that have emerged in the recent past. The final section deals with selected topics of importance in recent world economic experience and includes: the planning and operation of the world economic order; the international monetary system and its institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank; the development of private capital markets of a global dimension; international trade, especially the associated institutional forms of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the World Trade Organisation; transnational corporations; issues of economic development in their global and regional contexts and problems of systemic transition in the economies of centrally planned societies.
