ECON2015 Optimisation Techniques for Economists

Course Description This course provides a thorough coverage of static optimisation techniques as used in economics.  It will be application oriented, and focus upon development of the following techiniques and their applications in economics:
  1. Functions of one variable
  2. Differentiation
  3. Single-variable optimization
  4. Functions of many variables
  5. Comparative statics
  6. Multivariable optimization
  7. Constrained optimization
  8. Introduction to matrix and vector algebra
Learning Outcomes Successful students should be able to solve simple static optimisation problems and to recognise the application of optimisation techniques to problems in economics. 
Indicative Assessment A combination of regular Problem Sets, a midterm exam and a final exam.
