| Course Description |
The course examines the major developments in postwar European cinema through a detailed study of representative films by some of Europe's most significant filmmakers. Directors studied include Bergman, Polanski, Fellini, Bunuel, Pasolini, Herzog, and Kieslowski. Films will be examined in their historical and social context as well as in relation to their director's particular aesthetic and thematic concerns. The course is specifically intended to function as the aesthetic counterpart of European Cinemas, European Societies FILM2003 but it may also be taken on its own as a general survey of the major European auteurs. |

One 2,000 word essay and one two-hour examination. |
| Workload | A one 1-hour lecture, a one 1-hour tutorial/seminar and a screening per week |
| Requisite Statement |
For Film Studies major, Intro to Film Studies FILM 1002 and Intro to Film Genres FILM 1003 or two courses from the Faculty of Arts or permission of the Coordinator. There is no language prerequisite. Films not in English are subtitled. |
