Course Description

An overview of major prose works from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, written during the last century. Authors are likely to include Kafka, Böll, and Ingeborg Bachmann, but also a contemporary text, incl. Turkish-German literature. Aspects of literary history and theory, as well as the social context of the works will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes Developing skills to analyse and evaluate literature, as well as contextualizing it within an evolving German society. Awareness of the contribution of German literature to world literature. On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have significantly increased reading skills, while speaking and writing in German will also improve.
Indicative Assessment

Tutorial assessment throughout the semester (10%); 2 essays of ca. 1500 words, worth 40% and 50%, the 1st due in the semester teaching break, the 2nd (in lieu of an exam) during the exam period.

Workload

2.5 contact hours/week (weekly lecture and tutorial; fortnightly seminar). Beyond that, time spent will depend very much on students' reading speed in German, but no long texts (e.g. full-length novels) are prescribed.
