| Course Description |
This course provides an introduction to the study of riots and rebellions, and it explores what they can tell us about political, cultural and social changes in Europe and its colonies during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It focuses on revolutions and rebellions against British rule in America, Scotland, Ireland and India, and on riots and rebellions within Britain itself. The latter's transformation into an industrialized, imperial power was accompanied by substantial suffering and frequent protest. This course will offer participants the chance to study the forms of that protest and the factors which influenced its outcomes in various places. The course introduces important concepts in the study of conflict and change in modern societies. It will help you to understand historical processes that are common to the development of all Western societies and how they affected individual lives. |
| Indicative Assessment | Tutorial participation (10%), short assignments (30%), an essay of 2,500 words (30%), and an examination (30%). |
| Workload | Two one-hour lectures and a one-hour tutorial per week. Lectures will be recorded. |
