| Course Description |
This course will range across 20th Century Australian history chronologically and thematically. We will consider what internal and external factors have shaped Australia since it achieved nationhood in 1901. These include: Australia's geography; Indigenous affairs; international conflict; Depression; migration; relations with Britain and the US; unionism; feminism; and social movements and protest. Such topics will be considered within the context of ongoing and overarching questions about what constitutes Australia and Australian identity: who has been historically included and excluded? What is the White Australia Policy? What is the Australian Settlement? How independent is Australia? How different is Australia in 2000 to Australia in 1901? |
